PlanPacific was contracted by The Outdoor Circle, a non-profit organization, to prepare a policy plan and provide project management for technical components of an island-wide urban forestry plan for the City and County of Honolulu's Division of Urban Forestry. One of the components will include a field manual to be used as a reference by tree workers, construction contractors, designers and public agency project managers. Another component will be design guidelines for all required and/or protected landscape plantings in the urban environment. The policy plan will be the umbrella document for these components and the Division of Urban Forestry.

The urban forest provides many benefits besides the obvious scenic enhancement and recreational values. Trees and other landscaping provide relief from the heat island effect and reduce the intensity and pollution of stormwater runoff in densely developed urban environments. The also contribute economic value to surrounding properties.
